The School of Jewish Studies and Archaeology at Tel-Aviv University invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track position beginning March or October 2026.
We seek candidates with a record of excellence in research and teaching in one or more of the following areas:
● Bible: All fields of Hebrew Bible research, including the Apocrypha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the ancient translations, as well as the study of biblical literature in light of epigraphic and archaeological discoveries from the ancient Near East and the broader ancient world.
● Talmud: The literature of the Sages in all its forms and historical periods. Preference will be given to scholars who offer an interdisciplinary approach to the study of rabbinic literature within a broad historical, cultural, and legal context—for example, in relation to Second Temple literature, biblical interpretation and reception, Hellenistic-Roman literature, Qumran, early Christianity, Roman law, halakha and the Cairo Genizah, and material culture.
● Archaeology: The archaeology of the Land of Israel in the ancient periods (post-Neolithic), with an emphasis on social, symbolic, and economic aspects of the formation of complex and urban societies, and with relevance to related theoretical and methodological fields. Preference will be given to candidates with substantial experience in archaeological fieldwork.
Applicants with demonstrated expertise spanning more than one of these disciplines are especially encouraged to apply.

The principal language of instruction is Hebrew, but some courses are taught in English. Candidates who do not speak Hebrew will be expected to acquire the ability to teach in Hebrew within two years of their appointment.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. by the start of employment. Salary and employment conditions will conform to Tel Aviv University regulations. The appointment procedure will be carried out according to the rules and regulations of Tel-Aviv University authorities and is subject to the approval of the University authorities.
