The Hula Provides: Reconstructing Animal Economy and Provisioning under Empire at Kedesh Alexander Dorr

Abstract: The faunal assemblage from the Persian-Hellenistic administrative building (PHAB) at Kedesh provides a unique opportunity to investigate how this elite administrative center would have been provisioned by communities in the neighboring Hula Valley. By comparing zooarchaeological data from the Achaemenid and Seleucid phases, this lecture will illuminate how this administrative center engaged with its neighboring hinterland. By identifying what animals were brought to the PHAB to be slaughtered, this data can help to distinguish the nature of interaction and the degree of agency between administrators and neighboring tenant farmers under varying imperial regimes.
